Ages 13–17: Teen Animal Advocates

You’re ready to make a real difference. This section empowers teens to learn about animal welfare, explore careers, and take on meaningful projects that support HSLC and the pets we serve.

Welcome to our education site for teens. We are happy you have taken an interest in your local shelter. Maybe you are looking at volunteering and improving the lives of our homeless pets and learning what happens at the shelter. No matter what you are looking to help in, we need all the help we can get!

There are many areas where your help is needed. For example, we always need people to walk the dogs or sit with them and maybe read to them or just comfort them. Dogs love attention and shelter life can be very stressful and sometimes frightening for some dogs. Showing kindness and love really goes a long way in helping them feel less stressed. Our puppies also need a lot of socialization and playtime is an excellent way to socialize with them. Our Cats also love attention and love to be petted and comforted.

There are also chores that need to be done around the shelter, such as:
 Cleaning and disinfecting kennels
 Changing bedding
 Preparing meals
 Grooming and care
 Cleaning litter boxes and crates
 Laundry and dish washing
 And helping out at special events

Note: If you are under the age of 18, you must volunteer with a parent or guardian or an adult approved by a parent or guardian.  Please access our volunteer application below to get started and we will reach out to you!
